Family-to-Family


The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a free 12-week course for family caregivers of individuals with severe mental illnesses. Family-to-Family is free for family members, partners and friends of individuals with:
  • Major Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Schizoaffective Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Panic Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Co-occurring Brain Disorder and Addictive Disorder

This series of 12 weekly classes is structured to help caregivers understand and support individuals with serious mental illness while maintaining their own well-being. The course is taught by family member volunteers who know what it's like to have a loved one struggling with one of these brain disorders.

Family-to-Family offers information about

Illnesses of the brain and their treatment:
  • Up-to-date information about medications, side effects and strategies for medication adherence
  • Current research related to the biology of brain disorders and the evidence based, most effective treatments to promote recovery

Coping skills:

  • Gaining empathy by understanding the subjective, lived experience of a person with mental illness
  • Learning in special workshops for problem solving, listening, and communication techniques
  • Acquiring strategies for handling crisis and relapse
  • Focusing on care for the caregiver:
  • Coping with worry, stress, and emotional overload

The power of advocacy:

  • Guidance on locating appropriate supports and services within the community
  • Information on advocacy initiatives designed to improve and expand services.
