Peer-to-Peer Training for five NAMI Texas Affiliates

On November 3rd through the 5th, NAMI Texas had our first Peer-to-Peer mentor training. With 3 consumers from 5 Texas affiliates represented, we had a diverse group of folks ready to share their recovery successes and become peer mentors.

NAMI Texas is grateful to NAMI National and Astra Zeneca for their support in bringing us a truly wonderful and important program.

The Peer-to-Peer Recovery Curriculum is a nine week, 2 hours per week, experiential education course for those who wish to live well in their recovery from a serious mental illness. The course offers a comprehensive understanding of serious mental illness with topics ranging from stigma to relapse prevention to advocacy and much more.

Modeled after the highly successful Family-to-Family class, Peer-to-Peer was written by Kathryn McNulty, a person with a psychiatric disability who is also a former provider and manager in the mental health field and a longtime mutual support group member and facilitator.

I was fortunate to be able to take the class. I have lived with a serious mental illness since 1981 and I never had the privilege of spending much time with my peers.

For too long, I have felt alone and didn't realize the power of peer support and education. I was proud to be a part of this brave, lively and very special group of persons in recovery.

I look forward to mentoring others and becoming a part of an even larger, more special group of consumers!

The Peer-to-Peer Mentors include:

NAMI Andrews: Alan Harris, David Peralta and Tony Talavera

NAMI Austin: Andrew Cox, Diana Kern and Susan Mulcahy

NAMI Metropolitan Houston: Gwen Coleman, Finis Hay and Ashley Montondon

NAMI San Antonio: James Brower, Juany Lopez and Michelle Mata

NAMI Waco: Carmen Jones, Valerie Kibbe and Grace Randall

Diana Kern NAMI Texas Events Coordinator and NAMI Austin volunteer
